Flecks of Gold Alicia Buck Books
This book was the best book I've read in years! It was suspenseful, with twists and turns at every turn, a flavor of romance, and it was clean. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a fairytale or a good story with well-developed characters and a fresh new plot. If you like Doon, Ella Enchanted, The Selection, Cinder, or The Girl of Fire and Thorns you'll love this book just as much as I did!Tags : Amazon.com: Flecks of Gold (9781599553894): Alicia Buck: Books,Alicia Buck,Flecks of Gold,Cedar Fort, Inc.,1599553899,Action & Adventure - Survival Stories,Fantasy - General,Fantasy fiction,Fantasy fiction, American.,Imaginary places,Mothers and daughters,Science Fiction & Fantasy Fantasy,Children's BooksAll Ages,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Fantasy & Magic,Fantasy fiction, American,JUVENILE FICTION Fantasy & Magic,Science fiction (Children's Teenage),YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Young Adult Fiction Action & Adventure Survival Stories,Young Adult Fiction Fantasy General
Flecks of Gold Alicia Buck Books Reviews
I adored this story. Its different then what I usually read, but it definitely caught my eye. Mary is an outstanding character and the story line is gorgeous. I absoulutely love the cute ending, that last sentence is just amazingly done in my opinion, but I wont spoil that for you. This story is full of magic, adventure, another world, a dash of romance, and its just beyond magical how well this was put together, especially since this is the authors first book. I hope we get to see more from this author and maybe even a sequel.
I have given this book a 5-star as a reply to a comment from an earlier review, but it deserves its own review from me as well.
I bought this book from Barnes and Noble this summer after seeing the pretty front cover and reading the description on the back, and I was glad that I did.
Mary's father disappeared before she was born, and Mary's mother cycled through relationships like changing TV channels because all her boyfriends always ended up being abusive and threatening. After moving to a new town Mary found herself unnaturally attracted to Kelson, and when Kelson kidnapped her mother and vanished into the light, Mary had no choice but to pursue and plunged into a new world.
In this new alien world, everything was different. It was a desert planet with scorching sun and very technologically behind. It had no cars, no phones, no TV, and no electronic at all. Even paper and pen were a scarcity. Most importantly, Mary couldn't understand anything anyone said.
Mary overcame the language barrier through "lacing," which was a magical ability possessed by certain group of people, and was described as manipulating DNA sequence and molecule structures. In order to find her mother, Mary was suggested by a retired magician to seek help from the king in the King's city. On her way to the city, Mary was attacked and saved by Breeohan and together they traveled to the city and seek the king.
The writing was fluent, the plot was engaging, and the dialogue was witty and humorous. I especially like how magic was being handled. It doesn't take for granted that people just possess these magical powers magically but explains the "how" as well. Through Mary's POV, you can see the vivid landscape, feel her emotions, understand her decisions, and relate to her focus. There was a hint of romance but not enough to taint her goal. Although the ending is somewhat predictable, it is satisfying with a speck of surprise and definitely leaves room for a sequel.
Keep writing, Alicia. I would love to "see" what happens to the characters after they were settled into their new roles, and experience their new adventure.
I read this book after reading a review by theliteratemother.org. While I thoroughly enjoyed the engaging plot, character development and writing style, what I found most refreshing was that this book is one I could recommend to anyone without reservation. There is nothing morally objectionable in this book. The heroine in the story blunders her way from one mess to another yet is full of spunk and good character. She has the insecurities and fears we all have, yet she is also full of the courage and determination we all admire. I would love to see a sequel to this book. It was a great read that I couldn't put down. Thank you Alicia Buck. Well done!
It is a highly imaginative book full of life, magic and suspense.
This is everything I've been looking for, a well crafted and intriguing plot line, masterful writing and details, and a romance that unfolds without feeling forced or given more than we as readers need. Loved it!1
Good book. Clean. Funny. Solid Writing. A sweet, but not sappy romance. Great characters you can connect with. Interesting plot line, and absolutely wonderful world building.
1.5 stars. At the beginning of the story, I was relieved that the main character, Mary, was not cookie-cutter perfect. I liked that she said dumb things and made dumb mistakes.
However, Mary became infuriating to me. Her sarcasm was so thick to the point of rudeness, she lacked any and all communication skills, she whined constantly, and she never ceased to do dumb things. Furthermore, I can't stand heroines who have the attitude of "I don't need any help, I can handle it myself" (so many conflicts would have been avoided if she had ditched this kind of attitude). And I am sick of heroines in novels always "saving the day" and the men in their lives bowing down to them while they reign superior in the end, as was the case in this book.
As far as the plot goes, it was just ok. There was nothing very interesting or exciting about this book that sets it apart from others. The execution was very poor. And I'm not a big fan of the idea that any conflict or problem can be solved with the use of magic.
